Erla S. Haraldsdóttir

15 Oct - 05 Nov 2022

Erla S. Haraldsdóttir uses paintings, drawings, prints and collages as a medium to work with cultural symbols and find their place in haunting and narrative images. She is educated in painting and has a varied background in performance art and video works, but now focuses on figurative paintings where the physical properties of paint and color create and break up space, light and shadow. She draws inspiration from a variety of materials and motifs from the history of art, which she puts together with artistry and humor. In her works, she often weaves together fragments of personal symbols and cultural heritage to explore the interaction of family ties, memories and consciousness. Methodology is the focus of Erla's art; the process is guided by the works, which are often subject to various rules and restrictions or are created based on specific locations or narratives, or even instructions given to her by others.
